A sport coat is a jacket made to be worn with trousers that do not match it, so it comes in texture and pattern: checks, plaids, tweeds, hopsack. A blazer is the solid version, classically navy. A suit jacket is cut to match its own trousers and rarely looks right alone. Here is how they differ, how a sport coat should fit, and what to wear with one.
What is the difference between a sport coat, a blazer and a suit jacket?
Fabric and pattern. Sport coats use cloth with visible texture or a pattern. A blazer is a solid, usually navy, in a cloth with some surface to it (hopsack, flannel, soft twill). A suit jacket is smooth worsted wool with a flat finish, because it has to match its trousers exactly.
Structure. Most sport coats we sell are unconstructed or half lined with a soft shoulder. Suit jackets carry more canvas and a sharper shoulder, which is why they look stiff over jeans.
Buttons. Suit jackets use buttons that match the cloth. Sport coats often use horn; the traditional blazer used brass, though most modern ones have dropped it. On our site both live in the blazers collection.
Can I wear a suit jacket as a blazer?
Rarely. A suit jacket without its trousers usually looks like exactly that: the cloth is too smooth, the structure too sharp for chinos, and if you wear the jacket more often, the two halves fade at different rates and stop matching.
The exception is a suit in a textured cloth: grey flannel, navy hopsack, a brown check. If your suits are solid navy and charcoal, a $595 to $995 sport coat will get more wear than a third suit.
How should a sport coat fit?
Close through the shoulders and chest, long enough to cover your seat, with a quarter to half an inch of shirt cuff showing. Check in this order.
- Shoulder. The seam sits at the edge of your shoulder bone. A tailor cannot fix this, so it decides the size.
- Chest. Buttoned, the lapels lie flat and a flat hand slides inside. An X at the button means too tight.
- Length. Arms down, the hem covers your seat and ends about where your fingers curl. A touch shorter than a suit jacket is fine.
- Sleeve. Ends at the wrist bone so a little cuff shows. The easiest alteration, so do not reject a jacket over it.
How do I size a sport coat, and what can a tailor change?
Measure your chest in inches, snug, arms down. A 42 inch chest is usually a 42 jacket. The letter is length: S under about 5'8", R to 6', L above. Slim lines like Blue Industry and Paul Betenly's trim fit sit closer to the body, so between sizes, go up. Jack Victor says the same on its product pages: take the larger size and let the tailor bring in the waist.
A tailor can shorten or lengthen sleeves (less if the cuff has working buttonholes), take the waist in or out about one size, shorten the length a little, and fix a collar that stands off the neck. A tailor cannot move the shoulders, add real length, or take a jacket in two sizes. Shoulder right, sleeves long: buy it. Shoulder wrong: keep looking.
What should I wear with a sport coat?
Trousers that contrast with the jacket in colour and texture. That is the whole rule. A blue jacket over mid grey wool trousers, tan chinos or dark denim covers most days; a patterned jacket wants a plain trouser.
Underneath, a dress shirt with no tie for the office, a fine knit polo for the weekend. Brown loafers with chinos and denim, darker lace-ups with grey wool. Shirt lighter than the jacket, shoes darker than the trousers.

Common questions
Is a blazer more formal than a sport coat?
Slightly. A solid navy blazer sits one step above a patterned sport coat and one below a suit. For a first jacket, buy the solid blue; add the check second.
Can I wear a sport coat with jeans?
Yes, if the jeans are dark, straight and not distressed, and the jacket has some texture. A soft jacket over dark denim looks intentional; a stiff suit jacket does not.
Should I buy the same size as my suit?
Usually, but brands cut differently; Blue Industry runs slimmer than Jack Victor in the same size. Start from your suit size, check the shoulder and the button pull, and if in doubt go up.
Next step: pick a jacket above or browse the blazers collection and order in your usual suit size.
