A quarter-zip sweater works three ways: over a collared shirt with the collar out, under a blazer in place of a shirt and tie, and on its own with dark jeans. Choose the neckline first. A mock neck or stand collar looks smarter and layers under tailoring, while a funnel neck is more casual and best worn on its own.
Mock neck vs stand collar vs funnel neck: what is the difference?
The difference is height and structure: a mock neck is a short, close collar, a stand collar is a little firmer and frames a shirt collar, and a funnel neck is a wider, softer collar that rises from the shoulders like a sweatshirt.
Brands use these terms loosely, so judge by how the collar sits rather than the label.
- Mock neck: the Bugatchi Quarter-Zip Knit in Chalk ($275) has a front of 60% cotton, 38% polyester and 2% spandex, with 100% cotton back and sleeves. The Bugatchi Soft Touch jacquard quarter-zips are mock necks too. This is the cleanest option under a jacket.
- Stand collar: the Bugatchi Herringbone Quarter-Zip Knit in Navy ($245) and the Bugatchi Textured Quarter-Zip Knit in Navy ($245) both have a stand collar and a metal logo detail. They hold a shirt collar neatly.
- Funnel neck: the Psycho Bunny Gabe Quarter-Zip Sweatshirt in Ecru ($190) is 100% cotton French terry with a relaxed fit, dropped shoulders and a vented hem. Weekend territory.
If you buy one, start with a mock neck in navy or chalk.
How do you wear a quarter-zip with a shirt?
Wear the shirt collar laid out over the knit, top button undone, with the zip open just far enough for the collar points to sit flat.
Tuck the shirt in; a shirt tail hanging below a sweater looks like an accident. Let a little cuff show past the knit sleeve.
Keep one pattern in play. A patterned knit wants a plain shirt, and a plain knit can carry a patterned shirt. The Bugatchi Soft Touch Geometric Jacquard Quarter-Zip in Walnut ($285) has a jacquard front panel with solid back and sleeves, so pair it with a solid white or light blue shirt. It is 48% rayon, 46% polyester and 6% spandex and machine washable, which makes it an easy office knit. Speaking of the office, our post on smart casual for the office shows where a quarter-zip fits in a work week.
Can you wear a quarter-zip under a blazer?
Yes, a fine quarter-zip with a low collar under a blazer is the modern alternative to a shirt and tie for smart-casual dress.
Three things make it work. The knit must be thin enough that the blazer still buttons without pulling. The collar must be low enough to sit inside the lapels, which is why a mock neck or stand collar works and a funnel neck usually crowds the jacket. And the zip should be mostly closed, open an inch or two at most.
Some quarter-zips are better uncovered. The Sugar Porter Quarter-Zip Sweater in Indigo ($175) has a ribbed texture with a contrast collar and shoulder panel in a suede-like fabric. Put a blazer over it and you hide the shoulder detail that makes it interesting. Wear it on its own or under an open overshirt. It also comes in Jet and Cream.
How do you wear a quarter-zip with jeans?
Dark jeans, a quarter-zip and leather sneakers or boots is one of the most dependable weekend outfits a man can own.
Keep the denim dark and the fit slim or straight, so the outfit has a clean line from the knit to the shoe. With jeans you can wear the quarter-zip alone, over a T-shirt, with the zip fully closed or partly open. This is where the funnel neck earns its place: the relaxed Gabe with jeans and white leather sneakers is a Saturday outfit that needs no thought. How should a quarter-zip fit?
A quarter-zip should skim your body without clinging, with the shoulder seam at your shoulder bone, the hem at or just below your belt and the cuffs at your wrist.
Zip it fully in the fitting room. If the knit pulls across your chest or the zip ripples, go up a size. If you plan to wear it under a blazer, choose your true size; a loose knit bunches under a jacket. If you plan to wear it over a shirt, a little room is your friend. Dropped-shoulder designs like the Gabe are cut to sit below the shoulder bone, so do not size down to chase a sharper shoulder; that defeats the relaxed shape.
Common questions
Is a quarter-zip business casual?
Yes. A fine quarter-zip in navy, chalk or grey over a collared shirt with trousers is business casual in almost any office. Sweatshirt-style quarter-zips are better kept for the weekend.
Should you zip a quarter-zip all the way up?
Over a shirt, no; leave it open enough to show the collar. On its own on a cold day, zip it to a couple of inches below your chin. Fully zipped with a shirt underneath looks cramped.
Quarter-zip or crewneck: which is more versatile?
The quarter-zip, because you can adjust it. Open, it shows a shirt collar; closed, it keeps your neck warm. A crewneck does one thing well.
