Smart Casual for the Office | What Actually Works | Ed's Fine Imports

Posted on September 08 2026

Nobody has ever received the words "smart casual" and known exactly what to do. It's the dress code equivalent of being told to bring "a dish."

Here's a definition that actually functions: smart casual means tailored pieces in casual fabrics, or casual pieces in tailored shapes. One or the other. Rarely both at once.

The three-part test

Before you leave the house, check three things.

Is there structure somewhere? A jacket, a collar, or a shoe with a defined shape. If everything you're wearing is soft and unstructured, you've landed in casual rather than smart casual.

Is there something relaxed somewhere? A knit instead of a woven, a suede instead of a polished calf, denim instead of worsted. If everything is formal, you're wearing a suit without a tie, which reads as under-dressed formal rather than deliberately smart casual.

Does it fit? This matters more than either of the above. A well-fitted polo and chino beats a poorly fitted blazer every time.

Three outfits that work

The knit shirt route. A long-sleeve knit shirt, dark trousers, a clean leather shoe. The Psycho Bunny Holden Relaxed Fit Knit Shirt is the sort of piece this is built for: it has a collar and a placket so it reads as a shirt, but it's knitted so it doesn't feel like office wear.

The blazer route. An unstructured blazer over a plain tee or fine-gauge knit, with dark denim. The jacket does all the formal work, so everything underneath can be relaxed.

The layered route. A quarter-zip or overshirt over a collared shirt, with a chino. This is the most forgiving version and the easiest to adjust through the day as an office warms up.

What consistently doesn't work

Athletic footwear that's obviously athletic. A minimal leather sneaker is fine in most offices now. A running shoe with a visible air unit is not.

Anything with a large logo. Smart casual is about looking considered, and a prominent logo does the opposite.

A suit jacket worn as a blazer. Suit jackets are cut to match their trousers in fabric and sheen. Worn separately they look orphaned, and the mismatch is obvious to everyone.

Shorts. In almost every Canadian office, still no.

The seasonal adjustment

Summer smart casual can drop the jacket if the shirt is doing enough work. A textured or patterned shirt carries an outfit better than a plain one when there's no layer over it.

Winter smart casual is easier, because a knit layer solves the structure requirement automatically. Something like the Kai Twill Texture Hoodie works under a jacket in a genuinely casual office, though read your own room on that one.

When in doubt

Over-dress slightly. It is always easier to remove a jacket than to produce one.

Common questions

What does smart casual actually mean for men?

A collar, a decent trouser, and a real shoe. No tie required. The test is whether you'd be comfortable if the meeting suddenly became a client meeting.

Can you wear jeans as smart casual?

Dark, clean, no distressing, worn with a leather shoe and a proper shirt or knit. That reads smart casual in most Toronto offices.

Are sneakers acceptable in a smart casual office?

A clean minimal leather sneaker, yes. A running shoe, no. The distinction is real and everyone can see it.
