What to Wear to a Fall Wedding as a Guest: A Men's Guide

Posted on November 06 2026

Paul Betenly blazer in a blue mix geometric check, suited to an outdoor fall wedding

For most fall weddings, a male guest should wear a suit, or a sport coat with trousers, in a deeper colour than summer: navy, charcoal, brown, green or a muted check. Read the dress code first. Cocktail and semi-formal mean a suit, an outdoor or barn wedding allows a blazer, and black tie means a tuxedo or dark suit.

What does cocktail attire mean for a man at a fall wedding?

Cocktail attire means a suit, with a tie optional but never wrong, and it is the dress code that gives you the most room for personality.

Fall is the best season to take that room. Summer weddings lean light and bright; fall lets you wear richer colour and pattern. The Blue Industry Green Checkered Suit ($795) is a good example: a green check in a slim-fit stretch fabric, with a chest pocket and a removable pochette, so the pocket square is taken care of. With a white shirt and brown shoes it looks considered without trying to steal attention.

For an evening reception, a darker shirt is an option. The Bugatchi OoohCotton Devon Long-Sleeve Shirt in Black ($245) is 92% cotton and 8% spandex with a spread collar, so it moves well on a dance floor. Wear it open-collared under a charcoal or green suit. My one caution: a black shirt reads as evening, so skip it for a 2 p.m. ceremony.

What does semi-formal mean?

Semi-formal means a suit and tie, in a classic colour, with dress shoes.

This is the most common dress code on fall invitations, and it is less flexible than cocktail. Navy or charcoal is the safe choice, darker for an evening wedding. Wear a white or light blue dress shirt, a tie with some texture or a quiet pattern, and leather dress shoes with a leather sole, brown with navy or black with charcoal. If the invitation says black tie or black tie optional, that is a different level again; our guide to black tie, tuxedo vs dark suit explains where the line sits. My recommendation: if you own one suit for weddings, make it navy.

What should you wear to an outdoor or barn wedding?

An outdoor or rustic fall wedding usually allows a sport coat with trousers instead of a suit, and that is where fall patterns earn their keep.

The Paul Betenly Blazer in Blue Mix Geo Check ($695) is a geometric check in blues with a tailored, modern shape. Wear it with grey or brown trousers, a white or light blue shirt, and a knit tie or no tie. Bring a layer for after sunset; an October evening in an Ontario field gets cold quickly, and a fine merino or cotton knit under the jacket is far better than shivering through the speeches.

Think about the ground, too. Grass, gravel and a barn floor are hard on leather-soled dress shoes, which is the one case where a leather sneaker makes sense.

When can you wear sneakers to a wedding?

Only when the invitation says casual, the wedding is outdoors on grass, or the couple has told guests sneakers are welcome.

If one of those applies, choose a clean leather sneaker that looks like a shoe, not a gym trainer. The Johnston & Murphy Luther Lace to Lace in Taupe Italian Nappa ($318) has a soft nappa leather upper, a leather lining, a removable molded footbed and a rubber outsole, so it handles a lawn far better than a leather sole does. Taupe sits well with grey, brown and blue trousers.

Do not wear sneakers to a black tie, formal or semi-formal wedding, or to a church ceremony, even if you plan to change later. When in doubt, wear dress shoes. Our Johnston & Murphy sizing guide will help you choose a pair.

How far ahead should you get your outfit fitted?

Buy and try on your wedding outfit a few weeks before the date, so any alterations are done calmly rather than in a rush.

Fall is a busy season for weddings, and tailors fill up. Try the suit or blazer on with the shirt and shoes you plan to wear, sit down in it, and lift your arms. The jacket should button without pulling, the sleeves should show a little shirt cuff, and the trousers should break lightly on the shoe. A good fit matters more than the price tag at a wedding, because you will be in the photos for decades.

Common questions

Can a wedding guest wear a blazer instead of a suit?

Yes for outdoor, rustic or casual weddings. For cocktail, semi-formal or formal dress codes, wear a suit.

Can a guest wear a green suit to a wedding?

Yes. A muted green or green check is a strong fall choice for cocktail and semi-formal weddings. Avoid it only if the wedding party is wearing green.

What colours should a male guest avoid?

Avoid white, ivory and anything that could be mistaken for the wedding party's colours. If you know the groomsmen's colour, steer clear of it.
