How to Wear a Blazer With Jeans or Chinos (and Which Shoes)

A blazer works with jeans or chinos when three things line up: the jacket and pants are clearly different colours, the fabrics are close in weight, and the denim is dark and slim. What makes a blazer and jeans look right?

Contrast, fabric weight, and fit, in that order. The blazer should be a different shade from the pants: a blue check over dark indigo, a tan or grey jacket over navy.

Common mistakes with a blazer and jeans

• Wearing a suit jacket as a blazer. Suit cloth is finer and shinier, and looks orphaned over denim.
• Too much fade. Light or distressed denim fights with tailoring.
• Wide legs. The jacket is trim; the pants need to be too.
• Matching everything. One dark, one light, leather in a third tone.
• Belt and shoes that argue. Brown with brown, black with black.

How should the blazer and jeans fit?

Common questions

Can you wear a suit jacket with jeans?

You can, but it rarely looks right. Suit fabric is smoother and shinier than blazer cloth, so it reads as a mismatch. If it is all you own, pick the most textured one (flannel, tweed, a check) over dark denim. Long term, buy one blazer made for separates.

Should the blazer be lighter or darker than the jeans?

Either, as long as the difference is obvious. Lighter jacket over dark jeans is the easiest and most flattering version. Dark on dark only works when the fabrics clearly differ.

Can I wear a blazer and jeans to a wedding?

To a casual daytime or outdoor wedding, yes: dark jeans, dress shirt, leather shoes, textured blazer. For an evening or formal wedding, wear a suit. If the invitation says cocktail or black tie, jeans are out.

Do I need a dress shirt, or is a T-shirt fine?
