A knit blazer is a jacket cut like a sport coat but made from knitted fabric instead of woven cloth, so it stretches, moves with you and feels closer to a cardigan than to tailoring. Wear it the way you would a sport coat: over a shirt, polo or fine knit, with trousers, chinos or dark jeans.
What is a knit blazer?
A knit blazer is a tailored jacket made from interlocking knitted loops rather than a tightly woven cloth.
Woven suit cloth holds a crisp line but only gives where stretch fibres have been added. Knit fabric gives in every direction. Most knit blazers also have softer shoulders and a lighter front. From across the room it reads as a jacket; reaching for the steering wheel, it feels like a sweater.
The honest trade-off: a knit blazer will never look as sharp as a structured wool jacket. The lapel rolls softly and the shoulder follows your body instead of squaring it off. That is what makes it comfortable, and why it belongs in the smart-casual part of your wardrobe, not at a formal wedding.
Why is a knit blazer more comfortable than a sport coat?
A knit blazer is more comfortable because the fabric stretches and recovers, so the jacket moves with your shoulders and elbows instead of pulling against them.
You notice it in the ordinary moments: a long drive up the 404, eight hours at a desk, a dinner that runs three hours. A woven jacket tugs across the back when you reach forward and creases at the elbow when you sit. A knit mostly goes along with you.
Take the 7 Downie St. Terry Denim-Effect Knit Blazer in Navy ($595). It is 73% polyester and 27% viscose in a soft knit with natural stretch, finished with a textured navy surface that looks a little like denim. It still has a notch lapel and a tailored fit, so it passes for a proper jacket at the office. If you only buy one jacket for comfort, start here: navy goes with everything a navy blazer does.
Which knit blazer suits which man?
Choose by how dressy your week is: navy for work and dinners, light grey with a hood for weekends, and black with a quilted lining for cold days.
- The everyday jacket: the 7 Downie St. Terry above. Notch lapel, tailored fit, and a navy that pairs with grey, brown or blue trousers.
- The weekend jacket: the Soul Of London Light Grey Hooded Knit Blazer ($595) has a built-in zip-front hooded insert, a single button, patch pockets, a subtle textured knit and a contrast lapel pin. The hood makes it casual on purpose, so wear it with jeans and a tee, never a tie.
- The cold-weather jacket: the JOOP Black Hybrid Knit Jacket with Quilted Inlay ($995) combines blazer structure with knitwear comfort. It has a stand collar, a button front, ribbed knit sleeves, patch pockets and a zippered quilted inlay. On a raw November evening it can stand in for a light coat.
If the brand behind the Terry interests you, our piece on 7 Downie St. covers it.
How should a knit blazer fit?
A knit blazer should fit like a sport coat: the shoulder seam ends at your shoulder, the front buttons without pulling into an X, and a little shirt cuff shows at the sleeve.
Stretch is forgiving, which tempts men to size down. Don't. A knit stretched tight across the back shows every pull and loses its shape sooner. If you are between sizes, choose the one that fits your shoulders, because shoulders are the hardest thing to change. Knits behave differently under a needle than woven cloth, so if you are counting on shortening the sleeves, ask us first; our guide to what can and cannot be altered explains why. With the hooded styles, try the jacket on with the insert zipped, since it adds a little bulk at the chest.
What do you wear with a knit blazer?
Wear a knit blazer with trousers one step more casual than suit pants, and mix one smooth piece with one textured piece so the outfit has depth.
- Office: the navy Terry, a light blue shirt with the collar open, the Alberto Pipe Two Tone Brown ($345) five-pocket trousers and brown leather shoes.
- Weekend: the light grey Soul Of London, a plain white tee, dark jeans such as the Paige Federal in Chadron ($355) and white leather sneakers.
- Cold evening: the black JOOP over a black fine-gauge knit, charcoal trousers and black boots.
Most knit blazers look best without a tie. The soft lapel and a stiff silk tie pull in different directions.
Common questions
Can you wear a knit blazer to a wedding?
For a casual or daytime outdoor wedding, a navy knit blazer with good trousers and leather shoes is fine. If the invitation says cocktail, semi-formal or formal, wear a suit.
Do knit blazers lose their shape?
They can bag at the elbows and pockets if you treat them roughly. Hang yours on a wide, shaped hanger, keep your phone and keys out of the pockets, and give it a day off between wears so the knit can recover.
Is a knit blazer warm enough for fall?
On its own it handles a mild fall afternoon. Add a fine knit underneath when it turns cool, and for colder days choose a style with a quilted layer like the JOOP.
