Wear a check suit the way you would wear a navy suit, then keep everything else plain: a solid white or light blue shirt, a solid tie or none, and brown leather shoes. A green suit follows the same rule. Build around white, cream, navy and brown, and let the suit be the only colour in the outfit.
What shirt goes with a check suit?
A solid white or light blue shirt goes with any check suit, and if you want a pattern, choose one far smaller than the check.
The rule that keeps two patterns from fighting is scale. A large check jacket and a large check shirt at the same size compete for attention and blur together. A tight, small print reads almost like texture next to a bigger check, so the two sit together calmly.
That is why I suggest the Bugatchi Devon 8-Way Stretch Honeycomb Print Shirt in Light Blue ($245) as the first patterned shirt to try under a check. It has a point collar, a French placket and no chest pocket, so it lies clean under a jacket, and the 8-way stretch helps when you are sitting for a long dinner. If you are unsure, though, plain white never fails.
How do you wear a green suit?
Treat a muted green suit like a brown or navy one: it is more of a neutral than most men expect, as long as the shirt and shoes stay quiet.
The Blue Industry Green Checkered Suit ($795) is a good example. It is a green check in a stretch fabric, cut slim, with flap pockets and a chest pocket that comes with a removable pochette, so the pocket square is handled for you. Wear it with a white shirt for the most polished version, or with a cream or navy fine knit for a fall dinner.
What to avoid: a green shirt or green tie, which turns the outfit into a theme, and black shoes, which look heavy against green. Brown in any shade is the easy answer. Burgundy, navy or a soft grey tie all work if you want one.
Can you wear the jacket on its own?
Yes. A check suit jacket with a different trouser is one of the most useful things you can own, as long as the trouser is clearly not trying to match.
The green check jacket looks great with dark jeans, the Bugatchi Quarter-Zip Knit in Chalk ($275) with its mock neck, and the Johnston & Murphy Luther Lace to Lace in Cognac Italian Nappa ($318). That is a Saturday night outfit for a restaurant in Markham or downtown, and none of it feels stiff.
If you want a check jacket built for separates from the start, the Blue Industry Slim Fit Checkered Blazer in Dark Navy ($795) is the one: a dark navy check, slim fit, stretch construction, flap pockets and a removable pochette. It goes with grey trousers, brown five-pocket pants or jeans.
One honest caution: if you wear a suit jacket on its own every week, it will age faster than its trousers. Rotate it, and wear the full suit often enough that both pieces see the same amount of wear and cleaning.
How should a slim-fit check suit fit?
A check suit should fit cleanly across the shoulders and chest, because any pulling bends the lines of the pattern and makes a small fit problem very visible.
Both Blue Industry pieces are slim fit with stretch, so they sit close without restricting you. Check the button: when the jacket is fastened, the checks across the front should run straight, not curve toward the button. If you are between sizes, choose the one that fits your shoulders and have the waist taken in. Sleeve length and trouser hems are routine alterations; our guide to what can and cannot be altered covers the rest.
Common questions
Can you wear a green suit to a wedding?
Yes, for a fall wedding with a cocktail or semi-formal dress code a green check suit with a white shirt and brown shoes is a good choice. For black tie, wear a tuxedo or a dark solid suit.
Is a check suit appropriate for business?
A subtle, dark check like navy reads as business wear. A brighter or larger check is better kept for dinners, events and creative workplaces.
Should you wear a tie with a check suit?
You can. Choose a solid tie or one with a very small pattern, in a colour already in the outfit. An open collar also works, especially with the jacket worn on its own.
What shoes go with a green suit?
Brown. Dark brown leather for formal events, lighter cognac or suede for daytime and casual wear. Match the belt to the shoes, as our belt and shoe guide explains.
