5 Men’s Style Guidelines for the University Graduate

Whether it’s official or not, you’re probably well aware that you’ve done it! You’ve survived at least four years of grueling schedules, too many parties, not enough study time and crazy exams. It’s all behind you now and you’ve got your diploma.

Now what? If you can take some time off, great. If not, it’s time to get to work looking for work. Whether you’re lucky enough to have a job lined up, or you’re just getting your head into your resume, there’s one way to give yourself an edge against all the other graduates out there.

Look Sharp

Maybe you already appreciate the advantage of dressing well, or maybe you believe in the power of personality and skill sets alone in landing a position. In any case, there will be hundreds of job seekers who feel the same way you do. It means that, whether you like it or not, how you dress can make the difference in getting an offer.

Here are just a few guidelines to choose a wardrobe that’ll help you ace the interview.

1. Be Conservative

You don’t have to be boring, but if you go overboard in ‘expressing your personality’ to people you’ve never met, it has a greater chance of backfiring than anything else. Maybe try a different tie, but don’t go in with your Batman novelty tie trying to be ‘creative’ (not the Batman socks either!)

2. Quality Over Quantity

You and/or your parents have just poured buckets of cash into getting the piece of paper. Now’s not the time to let that effort down by wrapping yourself in the latest styles from Walmart.

3. Get Fitted

Especially if you’re going for an office or professional position, take the time to visit a proper menswear store and get fitted for at least one business suit. Oversized works great for hoodies, not for an interview.

4. Always Wear a Jacket

Even if you’ve graduated from something like media studies and you’re heading to a start-up marketing company where you know everyone’s in jeans and a t-shirt, show up in a jacket – even if it’s over your jeans and t-shirt.

5. Dress Right Down to Your Shoes

Regardless of whether you follow any of the other guidelines, at very least make sure you by a top notch pair of black or brown leather dress shoes. They can last a lifetime, and they’ll even go with your jeans.

It’s impossible to get into every detail of developing a job-winning fashion style in just a single blog post. But these basic guidelines will get you into the right frame of mind for it.
