Tips for Choosing the Right Business Suit for Your Body Type

Here's how to Choose the Right Business Suit for Your Body Type

The unfairness of life can strike in unexpected ways. We all want to look our best in a business suit. But it’s just not as simple as finding a suit that looks good. Why? Because those suits usually look good on models that have a certain body type. A body type that most of us don’t have.

How to Choose the Best Suit for You Body

Unless you have the standard height, weight and body type of a male fashion model, use the following guidelines to choose the right men’s suit for you.

Big & Tall

Larger and taller men run the risk of buying suits that are generally too large or small, just to fit one of their dimensions. For bigger body types, it’s most important to find a suit that’s not too tight around the middle, while still fitting your chest and shoulders. Taller men run the risk of suits fitting their torso properly, but with sleeves that don’t fit their arm length - and vice versa. Both bigger & taller men need to watch the waist sizes and the hemline of suit pants.

Athletic & Muscular

If you have a muscular body, you might have a more difficult time than most in finding a proper fitting suit. Jackets tend to be too small for your upper body, resulting in sleeves and jackets falling short. Look for jackets that properly fit your shoulders and chest while not being too baggy around the middle. Similarly, your pants need enough room for comfort around your hips, but a taper to keep them slim on your lower leg.

Slim

It’s very easy for a slender man to get a suit that is too big or small. If you find jackets and pants that fit your chest and waist, you’re going to struggle with the suit’s leg and arm length. Opt for the slimmest fit that fits your arms and legs. A wider lapel can add a broader look to your chest and shoulders.
